A Navy SEAL’s graduation speech went viral over the past few weeks, with nearly 1.5 MILLION YouTube hits as of today. His advice to grads? Start your day by making your bed.
What?? The big advice was…”to make your bed”??
The speech was also covered by major news media such as CNN, The Wall Street Journal, and The Today Show – among many others.
“If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed,” U.S. Navy Adm. William H. McCraven told the graduates of The Univeristy of Texas.
“If you make your bed every morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another,” he told University of Texas graduates last weekend.
“By the end of the day, that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed. Making your bed will also reinforce the fact that little things in life matter. If you can’t do the little things right, you will never do the big things right. And, if by chance you have a miserable day, you will come home to a bed that is made — that you made — and a made bed gives you encouragement that tomorrow will be better.”
Everything he said is so true! What really strikes me is how his message resonated so much with the media and the public. Not only that – there are a million other things he could talk about – but he chose to focus on the benefits of making the bed.
Just like Admiral McCraven, I really felt that something so simple as bed making was very important. The benefits go beyond the cleanliness of a home. Bed making is a ritual that keeps us “in order”, even mentally. And that is why Covermade was created. It was created to make bed making something that is quick and easy to do – every single day.
